It’s survey time again on My Words for a Change. Back in 2015 I ran my first survey on adverts on translation blogs (TLDR: don’t have any adverts on your blogs!). The following year I ran one on revisions (thus combining two of my favourite subjects). I spared you all my intrusive questions in 2017 and last year I ran a survey on whether blogging is dead (TLDR: no, it isn’t yet, but it really depends on the blog).
This year I want to quizz you about qualifications. As you probably know if you’re a regular reader, lots of guest posters have written about their experiences of MAs and MScs in translation for this blog, and the vast majority of them have been positive. But taking out a year or two to study a degree at university, even if it’s a distance-learning course, isn’t an option for all of us.
Welcome to part four of my miniseries on LinkedIn. Last time we looked at the “meaty” main sections of your profile page. Today I’m going to focus on the other sections that you can include to help you describe your services, give details of your qualifications and highlight any other aspects that potential clients might be interested in.
As I mentioned last time, you can change the order of the sections on your page to make it your own, emphasise what you feel is relevant and stand out from the crowd (certainly not an easy thing to do these days). At the moment, I’ve decided to put the Certifications section first because I want my potential clients to know that I’ve passed the ITI exam and am, therefore, qualified. You might not agree with my choice, and that’s fine, but I would recommend you fill in this section if you can since, according to LinkedIn, your profile will receive up to six times more views if you do.
This article will give you an idea of what getting the Diploma in Translation from the Chartered Institute of Linguists cost me and what return I have enjoyed on my investment, in order to help you anticipate what your own costs and returns might be if you are considering signing up for the exams in January to obtain this post-graduate qualification (the deadline for sign-ups is 31 August).
Don’t fret. While it might feel like that sometimes judging by your social media feeds, it’s far from the truth. And however tempting it might be to jet off to enjoy quality time with your colleagues, perhaps you could spend the considerable sum involved in attending a conference more wisely. Not only are there plenty of things you can be getting on with to ensure you get your dose of CPD (continuing professional development), they will probably also be better for you in the long-term and look far more impressive on your CV.
